About Us

The Average Parent is a site for everyday moms and dads seeking practical information they can actually use. Our contributors explore different topics of interest, including money and time saving tips, various parenting topics and honest product reviews. All our contributors are parents in the real world who focus on stories and tips that are relevant to you, the average parent. That’s not to say that we won’t be relevant to average people without kids. But, because we’re parents, we don’t quite remember what it’s like not to be parents.

In addition to providing original content, The Average Parent serves as a hub for all things interesting to parents. We believe there’s no reason for us to cover a topic if someone else has already done a good job with it. You can count on us to scour the net for interesting stories, great resources and other fabulous bloggers that we highlight in one central location for your convenience.

At the end of the day, we keep you up to speed on the best play date ideas, kid-friendly establishments and budget-saving activities for the whole family. We provide family-tested recipes and teach you how to pick the best wine, beer and even chocolate. Our researchers list tips for taking care of yourself, getting involved in the community and planning the best parent’s night out. We also provide topical stories for parents of all ages. Occasionally, we even throw in a random off-beat story just because we think you might be interested.

I am an average mom living a busy life in the Midwest. My family includes a lovable but hyper-active toddler, an obsessive compulsive husband and two spirited beagles who all keep me on my toes. In addition to taking care of my family full time, I work as a public relations pro serving small businesses and non-profits. I also serve as the leader for my local moms group and volunteer for many local and national non-profit organizations.

I enjoy meeting new people, learning and trying new things, and spreading the word about my experiences.

I am a stay-at-home mom and step mom to four kids. Between my kids, two dogs, and wonderful husband, life is busy at best! We love living in the Chicago suburbs and enjoy all the city has to offer. My husband and I like to travel and take the kids on road trips. Although infrequent, we enjoy wine tasting, touring wineries and going on vacation. Prior to becoming a mother, I worked in logistics for two large retailers. Thanks for joining me on this exciting new journey as I write about wine, food, travel, green living and family activities.

As a child I loved assisting my dad in his dark room as he developed wedding photographs. I was fascinated by the way the paper could change with the chemicals being used and I believe that curiosity is where my love of photography has grown. My first camera was always used to capture the people around me doing absolutely anything, even the dog. Then as a student at Purdue University, it was the action shots of my fellow track team members that I loved to capture. While teaching elementary school prior to having my own children, my students were my focal point in photographs. It was with their smiling faces that sparked my love of portraits. As my own children grow and become little independent women, my passion is capturing the moments of their lives that are not necessarily posed, but rather show the side of them that tells the story of who they are. We all learn as we grow and as a photographer I am grateful for the passions that living life has brought to my work.

I’ve had more lives than cat, and I’m sure there’s still a couple more left. I’ve worked as a bartender, tech writer (factory and office), gas station attendant, office clerk, journalist (reporter and columnist), public relations rep, apartment cleaner and telephone solicitor.

I enjoy traveling and have been to many major cities including New York, San Francisco, LA, Rome, Sydney, Hong Kong, New Delhi, and Athens. Those that are still on my agenda include London, Paris, Vienna, and lots of other places.

I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University, and love watching basketball, especially IU basketball…even though it can be painful at times.

Stash with Trash: Repurpose all those Containers

Before tossing it into the recycling bin or trash can, take a moment to think about how you can repurpose a lot of your household trash. For example, a leftover egg carton can be used to organize a craft drawer, or separate tiny hair pieces. Let your kids paint it for more style. An empty diaper wipes container is perfect for storing plastic grocery bags in the car or nursery, or you can repurpose it as a storage box for crayons, toy parts or other craft supplies. Got a messy top drawer in your office? Glass baby food jars are perfect for storing paperclips, push pins and other small office supplies.
