What would you do with that 50% savings each month? Making a few changes in your shopping habits can drastically reduce your grocery and drug store cost.

Here are 5 Tips to get you started:

1. Watch sales and stock up when the price is low. Easy items to stock up on are toiletries such as razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair products, deodorant, soap, and feminine products. Grocery items to stock up on include cereal, soup, snacks, and freezer items. Many perishable grocery items, such as meats, cheese, and breads, can be frozen before their expiration date to maximize their use.

2. Buy produce in season. Buying fresh produce isn’t just healthier, it is cheaper, too. I recommend checking out a local Farmer’s Market, too. And, you can always try to grow your own fruits and vegetables, too. A garden can is a great way to get fresh produce, but it can also be a fun family activity!

3. Use Coupons to drastically reduce your grocery bill by at least 25%. However, when combined with store sales at grocery stores that double coupons, your savings will jump to close to 50%. Look for coupons in the Sunday paper, which usually has 1 to 3 inserts each week.

Don’t feel like clipping? Use printable coupons and ecoupons to help you save time and your scissors. And if you are looking for a specific coupon, you can look in the Coupon Database for a quick result.

4. Shop Drugstores. Don’t do all your shopping at the grocery stores. Drug stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid have incredible sales with their reward programs, which can save money on some of the highest priced items on your grocery list – toiletries. Imagine getting razors, toothpaste, and deodorant free.

5. Make a list and stick to it. Even if you aren’t using coupons, you should have a plan on what you are going to buy in the store. This will keep you from impulse buying, which may cost you more than what you wanted and lead to buying unnecessary items. Plus, with a list, you’ll know how much you can spend, and how much you plan to save.

Utilizing these strategies each month, I have been able to save my family an average of 65% at the grocery store and 90% at the drug store. These simple steps will help you spend less on the items your family needs and stretch your hard earned dollar.

Before you head out to the mall for back to school clothes, check out some options to save on your purchases.

1. Check CardPool for discounted gift cards, which can be paired with coupons for added savings. I recently purchased a Bed Bath and Beyond gift card for 8% off. I then paired it with a 20% off coupon for a bigger deal.

2. Check RetailMeNot.com for printable coupons and online discount codes.

3. When shopping online, use Ebates for additional savings. Along with getting cash back for your purchase, you can find exclusive coupon codes. Sometimes the cash back is only 2%, but every little bit helps. Plus, if you’re a new member, you get a $5 bonus or a $10 gift card after you make your first purchase of $20 or more. Like I said, it all adds up. I’m up to $100 in my cash back account since joining a few months ago.

4. If you have a favorite retailer, inquire about a rewards program. I like to use JCP Rewards from Penney’s, but you might get more from another store…especially if you plan to drop a couple hundred dollars.

5. Use e-clubs to get coupons sent straight to your inbox. I always recommend setting up a separate email account for e-clubs and online shopping…that way your primary email account won’t get flooded with advertisements and potential SPAM. Below is a list of retailers I found that offer instant savings when you sign up for their e-mail alerts:

Aeropostale – get a free shipping code sent to your inbox, plus private “subscriber only” online promotions and automatic invitations to their Friends and Family In-store sales.

Bed Bath and Beyond – get a 20% coupon sent straight to your inbox.

Crocs – 20% off introductory welcome offer.

Carter’s / OshKosh B’Gosh – Regular 20% off coupons and online discount codes.

Express –get 15% off your next purchase. (email sign up is on the bottom of the right column)

FootLocker – $10 off your next purchase of $50

Hollister – 20% off your next purchase.

Limited – $15 off when you spend $50 in stores or online.

Macy’s – get $15 off an online order of $100 or more.

Wet Seal – Free Shipping on your first purchase of $15 or more.

The best part about these deals is that although the savings are somewhat limited, when you add it to store coupons and sales, you can really come out ahead. Plus, if you’re going to shop there anyway, you might as well save a bit of extra cash. (Note that availability and promotions vary by site, so it pays to visit often to see what they have.)

Here are a few deals I’d like to highlight for examples:

Gap and Old Navy gift cards are available through Card Pool for about 11% off. It’s not at all uncommon to see a discount code for at least 15% for both retailers…but you can usually find discounts as high as 25%. Hit the sales and you’ll save even more.

Border’s gift cards are available through Card Pool for a 12% discount. If you join their Rewards Program, you’ll get a coupon emailed to you just about every week.

Kohl’s gift cards are also available through Card Pool for a 12% discount. I don’t need to tell you about the plethora of sales and coupons available through this retailer…so the savings are unlimited. Just for signing up for their email alerts, they’ll send you an e-mail that’ll save you $5 off your next in-store purchase and 10% off your next Kohls.com purchase.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, City Deals has $20 Buca Di Beppo gift cards for 50% off. Pair this with their printable coupon to save $10 on purchases over $20 and you’ll save double.

City Deals is also offering $14 Domino’s gift cards for 20% off. Pair this with a coupon or their 2xTuesday Deal, which offers you a FREE large pizza when you buy another one at menu price.

Movie Theater gift cards are available through both City Deals and Card Pool…and with the price of tickets these days, you’d be a fool not to take advantage of as many deals as you can. See my earlier post, Get Free (or Deeply Discounted) Movie Tickets, to see how you can take full advantage of all the savings.

Bellow is a list of some great–and cheap–things you and your family can enjoy. I’m always looking for new ideas too, so if you have additional suggestions, feel free to leave me a comment. Also, don’t forget to use your Entertainment Book for more savings.

Kerasotes Movie Theaters
Participating Kerasotes movie theaters offer the $5 Buck Club. After a particular film has played a certain number of weeks (at least two, but occasionally more) members can gain admission to movies for just $5. Each person needs their own card, which is free by registering online. Super Saver Tickets can also be purchased in advance for discount.

AMC Theaters
AMC Theaters also offers a variety of specials for members of their “Movie Watcher” program including discounted tickets on special days of the week, coupons for concessions, and free popcorn on Wednesdays. Plus, you can now get half priced tickets during the week (no membership required.) AMC Weekday Escape offers the same blockbuster movies at half price* Monday through Thursday. (*Additional upcharges for IMAX®, 3D, Fork and Screen, and Cinema Suites apply. Excludes Premium Theatres, Weekday Film Openings, Alternative Content and Holiday Periods.) To land money saving coupons to the concession stand, just click on the Programs & Offers tab to see what they’re offering. Finally, you can also save even more by purchasing a gift card at a 20% discount from CardPool, an online resource that allows people to buy and sell gift cards at significant savings.

AMC also runs a yearly Summer Movie Camp that provides kids admission for around a $1 during select shows. Last year it was Wednesdays at 10 a.m., but check the website for 2010 details to be released.

Regal Theaters
Each time a movie ticket is purchased, Regal Crown Club members earn rewards such as free movie tickets, popcorn, soft drinks and more. Super Saver Tickets can also be purchased in bulk for discount. Plus, get drinks and popcorn for a dollar.

Community Theater
Nothing can quite match the excitement or the emotion of a live performance. There are thousands of small theater companies all over the country with diverse offerings ranging from Les Miserables to Annie. With average ticket price around $8-$20, it’s the best value in entertainment.

Libraries
Community libraries are a great source for free events ranging from story time, movie viewings, crafts and even events for just adults. My local library recently hosted a coffee tasting event, which was sponsored by Starbucks…Yum! Also, most people don’t know that in addition to borrowing books, you can also borrow CDs and DVDs from your local library. Why spend $5 at Blockbuster when you can get a movie for free from the library?!

Bookstore Storytimes and Special Events
Foster a love of books in your child by participating in one of Barnes & Noble’s or Borders Books free storytimes, which include a story and a creative activity to go along with it. Themes and times vary from location to location, so check with your nearest store for specifics. In addition to regular storytime, bookstores also host special events on a regular basis. Check out their online calendars to see what’s coming up in your area.

Toy Swap
Invite friends to bring old (but in good condition) toys that they no longer want to a playdate. Then, let the kiddos draw a number to see who gets to pick their “new” toy first.

Volunteer
Inspire a spirit of volunteering in your little ones and have fun at the same time. You can even start a Kids Care Club with a group of neighborhood children. Visit kidscare.org to learn more.

Many local hospitals and health networks offer free classes on a variety of topics. You can find classes ranging from yoga, cooking, reducing stress, CPR, etc.

Tours
Many local companies and restaurants offer free tours. Some examples include Krispy Kreme, McDonald’s and Chick-Fil-A. Others include farms, dairy farms, animal hospitals, police stations, fire stations, etc. If your town has a special manufacturing plant, it’s worth checking out if they offer tours. Also, wineries and breweries are good tour and tasting activities for the over-21 crowd.

Chick-fil-A
Most Chick-fil-A restaurants offer a Family Fun night each month. (Some even do it weekly.) Games, activities and prizes are provided for the little ones, as well as an indoor play area. Some restaurants also offer special deals for kids’ meals. Check with your local Chick-Fil-A for more details.

Fazoli’s Resataurants
Head over to Fazoli’s for Kid’s Night! Enjoy crafts, games, food, and fun!
Community Centers
Check out your local community center or YMCA for activities and super cheap gym memberships. Many also offer free or nearly free events for kids. My local community center offers a Tot Open Gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning for just $2. It’s a great opportunity to let the kids burn off some energy and get the average parent out of the house.

Animal Shelters
Many animal shelters need dog walkers and cat cuddlers to help socialize animals for adoption. If you have a child that LOVES animals, this may be a great option. And it’s not just cats and dogs! There are other types of animal rescues out there and many of them want volunteers to come in and help socialize animals. So if you can find a local horse rescue, your horse-obsessed little girl may be able to spend some time grooming the ponies.

Geocaching
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played with a GPS device. The basic idea is to locate containers hidden outdoors, called geocaches, and then share your experiences online. After the initial investment of purchasing the GPS device, the game is basically free.

Canning Hunger
Canning Hunger is a national movement where volunteers visit 10 or more of their neighbors a few times a year to collect non-perishable food items. That food is then given to a local food pantry to distribute to needy kids and their families in the community. It’s a great way to get a bit of physical activity, socialize with neighbors and spend time as a family!

Art Appreciation
Watching an artist paint, pot, sculpt or blow glass can be fascinating for both parents and kids. Contact your local chamber of commerce to find an arts center or museum that will allow you to come and watch.

Organize a Neighborhood Game Night
That’s why I’m always searching for ways to save at the movies. Here are few ideas you might find useful:

AMC Theaters

AMC Theaters also offers a variety of specials for members of their “Movie Watcher” program including discounted tickets on special days of the week, coupons for concessions, and free popcorn on Wednesdays. Plus, you can now get half priced tickets during the week with the AMC Weekday Escape (no membership required.) This program offers the same blockbuster movies at half price* Monday through Thursday. Finally, you can save even more by purchasing a gift card at a 20% discount from CardPool, an online resource that allows people to buy and sell gift cards at significant savings.

AMC also runs a yearly Summer Movie Camp that provides kids admission for around a $1 during select shows. Last year it was Wednesdays at 10 a.m., but check the website for 2010 details to be released.

Kerasotes Movie Theaters

Update: Kerasotes has been bought out by AMC and will be phasing out these programs.

Participating Kerasotes movie theaters offer the $5 Buck Club. After a particular film has played a certain number of weeks (at least two, but occasionally more) members can gain admission to movies for just $5. Each person needs their own card, which is free by registering online. Super Saver Tickets can also be purchased in advance for a discount.

Also worth noting, Kerasotes has a program called “Matinee Movie Magic for Moms (and Dads)” that creates an opportunity for parents to attend first-run films in a baby-friendly environment, and without fear of disturbing fellow moviegoers. This program is available for selected showtimes and features on Tuesdays.

Regal Theaters

Each time a movie ticket is purchased, Regal Crown Club members earn rewards such as free movie tickets, popcorn, soft drinks and more. Super Saver Tickets can also be purchased in bulk for a discount. You can also save even more by purchasing a gift card at a 20% discount from CardPool, an online resource that allows people to buy and sell gift cards at significant savings.

Regal’s Free Family Film Festival offers free admission to selected G or PG movies start at 10:00am every Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. Tickets and seating are first-come, first-served, are limited to theatre capacity and are exclusively available at select theatres’ box office on the day of the show. Check the site to find a participating theater.

Cinemark Theaters

Gift cards are available for a 20% discount from CardPool, an online resource that allows people to buy and sell gift cards at significant savings.

Cinemark is also offering a Summer Movie Clubhouse program for 2010, which will show 10 movies for just $5. All 10 movies can be purchased in advance for $5.00, or can be purchased separately at the box office for $1.00 per show. These movies aren’t new releases, but it’s still a fun excuse to head to the theater.

Carmike Cinemas

Carmike offers a variety of deals including Super Stimulus Tuesdays, where you can get $1 Popcorn, $1 Drink, $2.50 Candy, and $5 off one of their concession combos. To view more deals, click on the “Promotions” link on the top of their home page.

Carmike’s Summer Kid’s Series gives you admission to some of your favorite blockbuster films from the past for only a buck. Plus, get drinks and popcorn for a dollar.

Gofobo and Film Metro

Gofobo and Film Metro are great opportunities to get free passes to advanced movie screenings. It’s totally free to sign up and they’ll send you an email notification when tickets are available in your area. If you have more than two people looking for passes, it might be a good idea to set up multiple accounts.

Something to note: Only the first 100 people will be admitted with the pass. You might remember an earlier post letting you know about the Letters to Juliet screening. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to catch that one, as it was full by the time I got there. I ended up forking over the cash to see it at another theater, but I learned that sometimes you need to get there as much as an hour before show time. (I was there 30 minutes early, but was too late.)

“A nursing mom is typically familiar with the health and bonding benefits that come with breastfeeding. What she might not know, however, is that many health insurance plans cover certain breastfeeding-related expenses—whether it be breastpump rental/purchase or a visit with a lactation consultant.

Because coverage for these expenses varies widely among different health insurance plans, Medela worked with respected insurance experts to provide families with reimbursement-related resources to help them determine what their insurance will cover. This information can now be found on Medela’s new insurance reimbursement site at www.breastfeedinginsurance.com.”

Visit their story to see the breakdown and specifics, but if you’re interested in knowing where I go to find deals, here are my faves:

1. I sign up for e-newsletters for all my favorite companies. This allows me to get promos and coupons sent straight to my inbox. Most companies will offer you a coupon just for signing up. Visit my post, Score Free Food with E-clubs for a detailed list of restaurants worth signing up for.

2. I become a fan of my favorite brands and companies on facebook. Some of best pages for promos include, Ruby Tuesday, Einstein Brothers, Build a Bear, Kohl’s, Taco Bell, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, The Children’s Place, Baja Fresh, Stride Rite, Huggies, Buca Di Beppo, Bravo, and Spaghetti Warehouse.

3. While I’m not as active with twitter, there are still a lot of great deals to be found that way. Erin Gifford at CouponCravings.com has put together a great list of 15 retailers, deal forums and cash-back shopping sites to follow on Twitter. Check out her post to find out who you should be following. You can also check out Mashable’s June 2009 post 5 Ways Twitter Can Save You Money to find more ways to score on twitter. While you’re on twitter, make sure to follow The Average Parent too.

6. I also have a handful of websites and blogs that I check regularly for great deals. Here are a few of my favorites. Coupon Cravings, Saving Cents with Sense, Freebies 4 Mom, Groupon, and Brad’s Deals.

7. Last but not least, I have a few websites I use to find specific deals. Retailmenot.com is my go-to when I’m looking for a deal on a specific purchase I need to make. The site allows consumers to find and share coupon and promo codes for great discounts at thousands of online stores. Before making any purchases online, just key in the retailer’s URL to find your savings opportunities.

I also have a couple go-to sites for cashback or rewards points. ShopatHome, Bing Cashback and Ebates allow you to earn 1-30% cash back just for shopping through their sites. Membership is completely FREE and you also gain access to thousands of coupons, FREE samples and more. I use Ebates which gives you a $5 bonus just for signing up, plus $5 for every member you refer. MyPoints is similar, but instead of earning cash, they reward you with points for doing what you already do online: shopping, reading emails, playing games, searching the web, taking surveys, and more! You can then use your points to get gift cards for nearly 100 different stores and restaurants. Membership is totally FREE and you pick the rewards you want.

8. If that’s not enough. Here are a few more posts that might help you out.

Back in October 2009, Woman’s Day magazine put together an informative piece about working from home. In “8 New Ways to Work from Home” they gave some really great ideas for us average parents to earn a little extra cash on the side. The only problem is that the article left me wondering how to actually land one of these jobs.

The scary part is that scammers capitalize on our need to earn extra money and it can be quite dangerous to launch a “work from home” Google search. From phishing sites, malware to outright scams, there’s no telling what you’re going to find. That’s why I love the book “Work at Home Now — The No-Nonsense Guide to Finding Your Perfect Home-Based Job, Avoiding Scams, and Making a Great Living,” by work-at-home experts Christine Durst and Michael Haaren.

When it comes to looking for opportunities to make money, build a career in a certain field or navigate an unfamiliar territory, I almost always look to a book because I feel like it’s a bit more legitimate. My thinking is that anybody can put up a website, but writing a book takes a ton of time, energy and resources. Plus, not anybody can get a book deal with a reputable publisher…you need to be an expert and know what you’re talking about. Christine Durst and Michael Haaren are the experts needed for just such a book. Their job-finding workshops for the U.S. State Department and the Armed Forces are the basis for this book and each has appeared on numerous national news programs such as CNN, ABC News and the Today Show.

They sent me a copy to review and I have to admit, I felt like I hit the jackpot! Recommended by the Wall Street Journal and ABCNews.com, “Work at Home Now” shows you how to find the legitimate jobs and projects with minimal hassle, and avoid the scams. The middle of the book divides employers by field and provides a bit of information on the company, who they hire and their contact information. It’s just so easy!

Here’s What You Can Learn:

The top insider tips on good and bad Google search terms.

How to find the “needles in the haystack” on Craigslist, Indeed, Monster, CareerBuilder, and other big sites.

Where to find the real jobs for mystery shoppers, transcriptionists, and similar part-time specialties.

Scam-spotting tips that work.

The best part is that they’ve provided me with three copies to giveaway. Two lucky readers will win a copy and an additional copy will be donated to my local library so that even more people can reap the benefits of this great resource.

Here’s How You Can Win

This contest has ended.

To win, you must visit their website www.RatRaceRebellion.com, then come back here and tell me something interesting you’ve learned.

Additional Entries (make sure to leave a separate comment for each entry):

Follow The Average Parent on facebook.

Follow Rat Race Rebellion on facebook.

Post this page to your facebook profile.

Follow The Average Parent on Twitter.

The contest will end at the end of the day Wednesday, Feb. 10, at which time the winner will be chosen at random. The winner will have two business days to respond to me with a shipping address. Must ship to an actual address in the US (no P.O. boxes). Must be 18 or older to enter. Because I use the website Random.org to generate the winner, I’ve decided that Average Parent contributors are now eligible to win. Good luck everybody!
